Bombino Concert, Agadez



Omara "Bombino" Moctar is a Tuareg musician from Niger. His music adresses political concerns of the Tuareg people. He was forced to flee during Tuareg rebellions and lost friends, which influenced him to condemn guns and use his guitar as a symbol of freedom. To celebrate the end of the conflict, Bombino was able to return to his home city Agadez in Niger in 2010 and hold a large concert at the Grand Mosque.

尺八

Shakuhachi (尺八), a japanese end-blown flute, traditionally made out of bamboo. It was used by Fuke-Zen-Buddhist monks for meditation and originated from the chinese Xiao (簫). It is also said that the instrument is pretty hard to learn.

A Rhodope folk song, sung by Rumen Rhodopski and accompanied by Kaba Gaida. The Kaba Gaida is a traditional Bulgarian bagpipe instrument coming from the Rhodope Mountains. It is similar to the Gaida, a bagpipe made out of sheep or goat hide coming from Southeastern Europe and the Balkans. The stocks and the drone a normally made out of wood or animal horn. The blowpipe is wooden or bone. The drone which is a constant, low harmony tone, is mostly an E.

A beautiful piece of Chinese bamboo flute music performed by musician Chen Yue. The Xiao is an ancient Chinese vertikal end blown flute which comes in different varieties but is generally made of bamboo. The popular Japanese flute Shakuhachi is actually descendend from an earlier form of the Chinese Xiao, which was brought to Japan approximately 500 years ago. Originally this flute was used by Buddhist monks as an instrument for meditation. Also pay attention to the beautifully played piano which accompanies the flute.

A live recording of legendary Paskistani Qawwali singer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He is considered as one of the greatest singers of all time. Qawwali is a form of Sufi music which is about 600-700 years old. As musical instruments the pump organ, the Tabla and Dholak drum and hand-clapping are used. In addition to that is homophonic singing. Especially remerkable is that, although classical Sufi literature is used as basis for the lyrics, the singing of these long lasting pieces (this one is 30 minutes long) is mostly improvised.

The name of the song is ''Hờn Anh Giận Em'' by back then popular musicians Hùng Cường & Mai Lệ Huyền. This is an amazing track of the mostly forgotten era of electrified Vietnamese music of the 1960's and 70's. This musical style developed through the various western influences on Vietnam at the time, and even before. It was one of the biggest musical scenes of this style in South East Asia.

Mali legendary musician Boubacar Traoré performing ''Diarabi'' (only audio). Traoré, also known as ''Kar Kar'', gained popularity with his ''Mali Twist'' in the early 1960's. He has had a very unique and exciting life story which has been picturized in the movie "Je Chanterai Pour Toi" by Jacques Sarasin. If you are interested, you can also check out a recent rendition of this song by the swedish band ''Goat'' on their album ''World Music'' which I also quite enjoy.

A live recording of Enkh Jargal, a Mongolian musician. He is a virtuoso on the traditional mongolian instrument Morin Khuur, a bowed stringed instrument with a horse head. This amazing singing technique is called overtone singing. in the end he leads into a gallop rhythm of the folk music of the horsemen of the steppe.
